The EMD SD50 is a type of diesel-electric locomotive that was produced by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors between 1981 and 1986. It has a 16-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine capable of producing 3,500 horsepower, which is transmitted to the wheels through a DC generator and six traction motors. The SD50 was designed for heavy freight service, and many were used by major railroads such as Conrail, Burlington Northern, and Union Pacific. Some notable features of the SD50 include its computerized systems for engine control and diagnostics, as well as its flared radiators designed to provide better cooling and improve visibility for the engineer. While many SD50s were retired from service in the 2000s, some remain in use on shortline railroads and in other specialized applications.
